An Eye for Inclusion: GDI Hub partners with NIUA for global photography competition ‘an Eye for Inclusion”
GDI Hub is delighted to be supporting the National Institute for Urban Affairs (NIUA) our AT2030 programme partners based in India, in a global photography competition that calls for photographers and photography enthusiasts to capture what disability inclusion looks like for them.
The competition
'An Eye for Inclusion’ aims to capture and enrich image-making culture around disability inclusion, promoting inclusion by showcasing real life solutions, stories and best practices from everyday life that improve the lives of disabled people around the world. The challenge seeks submissions across three themes:
- universal access (in the built environment)
- technology and innovations (such as assistive, mainstream, urban specific)
- Unique interventions (policies or cultural practices or community efforts or change-makers)
Participants are encouraged to capture and share their photographic expression of the thematic areas. Submissions that capture images of urban environments are particularly encouraged.
The contest was launched on December 3rd 2020, the International Day of Disabled People, and we are accepting submission until March 13th 2021.
Winners will be announced on April 3rd 2021 and an event will be held shortly after. Winning images will be featured by NIUA’s BASIIC Programme and GDI Hub’s AT2030 programme, giving photographers a global stage to showcase their work and celebrate disability inclusion. An exhibition of the winning submissions is anticipated to take place in India and the UK, or virtually, depending on the feasibility of in-person events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
About
We partner with NIUA and Kiran Society on our UK Aid funded AT2030 Inclusive Infrastructure sub-programme to conduct a case study on inclusive design and accessibility in Varanasi, India. This contest is part of NIUA’s FCDO-funded BASIIC programme that is investigating building accessible, safe and inclusive Indian cities and will support our AT2030 sub-programme’s work on inclusive design and infrastructure through capturing representations of inclusion and accessibility in the built environment in India and around the world.

Aim of the contest:
To engage a global community of citizens who have an eye for identifying inclusive solutions, are aware of the needs of disabled people, and actively seek means to improve their quality of life.
Submission format: Entries from any digital cameras, including smartphones, will be accepted for all BASIIC Global Photo Contest categories.
Geographic scope: Global
How to enter: You can enter the competition through the challenge website where you will be asked to register and create an account to submit your photograph when you click on the submission page. This account creation process is quick, and you will immediately receive an email to confirm your account registration.
You will be asked to provide an image description alongside your submission that described what the image shows, why it is important and how the image reflects disability inclusion.
Closing date: 13th March 2021
Eligibility: open to all, professional and amateur, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. Entrants under 18 years of age require the permission of a parent or guardian Consent form. By entering the contest, entrants under 18 years of age indicate that they have obtained the permission of a parent or guardian. The contest is not open to employees of NIUA and GDIH (the "organizer") and FCDO (its partners or its subsidiaries or affiliates).
