Prime Minister Keir Starmer announces AI ambitions at UCL East, the home of GDI Hub
Today we were delighted to welcome Prime Minister Keir Starmer to our home at UCL East as he set out plans for the UK to be one of the great AI superpowers.
AI is becoming increasingly embedded in daily life. The potential for bespoke solutions is substantial, especially when combined with open access resources. AI provides both a chance to do things differently and a challenge to do things well. At the Global Disability Innovation Hub we are exploring new applications for AI across disability innovation and humanitarian settings, while recognising the importance of human-centered algorithms to ensure existing imbalances are not compounded.
GDI Hub is a leading global voice on AI and disability - we advise on the international stage as well as delivering emerging AI led solutions. By working alongside big tech and global delivery partners, we can change lives and ensure the benefits of AI reaches the most marginalised communities.
We believe those most affected by intractable problems often are best placed to design the solutions – so our methodology is to lead disruptive partnerships to leapfrog to change. Just last week we launched the Centre for Digital Language Inclusion - which will use AI-powered communication tools to advance pioneering non-standard speech solutions in Automatic Speech Recognition for global languages. The centre will advance digital language inclusion by ensuring all languages and types of speech are supported by technology.
As stated by Prime Minister Keir Starmer "AI has arrived. Our defining opportunity is here, and together we will harness it."
We know that when we include disabled people in data sets, the algorithms are better, then the technology and solutions are better. Disability-inclusive design effectively future proofs technology. As the use of AI expands, so does the opportunity for inclusion and innovation.
