Inclusive Education in Uganda: The Impact of Assistive Technology

The project focuses on the impact of assistive technology and accessible learning materials in promoting participation of children with disabilities in Uganda. This project aims to provide support to overcome barriers to education through assistive technology and to develop the evidence base for how technology helps inclusion in the classroom.

UNICEF launched a project entitled Access to accessible learning materials to promote inclusive education with the support of Ministry of Education and Sports and the involvement of Kyambogo University and the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC). This project was launched so as to meet challenges that children with hearing and sight impairments face while in school.

This project was therefore mounted with the aim of improving learning outcomes for these children and increasing their participation in primary school and transition into secondary education. It was anchored on Government of Uganda - UNICEF Country Programme Output 2: Basic Education, which is by end-2020, enhanced national capacity to increase equitable access, quality and sustainability of primary education that is inclusive and innovative to impart relevant knowledge and skills.

GDI Hub is working to support Makarere University in evaluating the programme.
